To understand the art and culture of Berlin in the 1920’s it
is important to understand the atmosphere of the time. With Germany suffering a
humiliating defeat in WW1 many Germans felt a sense of bleakness. The Germans were in a depression which led to
an odd start of frenzied entertainment fuelling Berlin’s musical, artistic and
literary renaissance.
Berlin in the 1920’s reached its peak of diversity. It was a
place where creativity could thrive, but the ‘Live fast, die young’’ ethos of the time
was cut short by the rise of the Nazis.
