Expressionist Painting
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a German expressionist painter and print maker was a significant artist during the Weimar Republic. When the Nazi’s gained power he was forbidden to paint because they felt his work was degenerate. I love his use of strong colour and intense brush marks in his paintings and as a make-up artist it was interesting to interpret.
My Interpretation
I decided to go for more of a delicate look as opposed to Schmidt-Rottluff’s
harsh way of painting, although I still interpreted his strong brush marks.
I used shapes that flowed over the face, but also distorting it at the same time..
What
I would have liked to have done more is to have coloured larger areas of the
face, making it even more abstract and reminiscent of Rottluff’s paintings.
